Gastric Sleeve

How do I prepare for gastric sleeve surgery?
If you are considering surgery, you are likely to need different tests to make sure that gastric sleeve surgery is right for you.

At ELITE MED CLINIC , you will have all your necessary pre-op tests and a full consultation with your gastroenterologist.

What happens during gastric sleeve surgery?
The keyhole surgery is performed using a general anaesthetic.(takes 45/50minutes)

The surgeon will use a stapling device to create a small tube or 'sleeve' in the stomach, then remove the rest of the stomach.
A thorough leak test is carried out after your procedure.
After surgery, the stomach will hold only about a fifth of what it did before.

During gastric sleeve surgery, a large part of the stomach is removed.

What can I expect after the procedure?
If you have gastric sleeve surgery, you will first start with liquid foods. Over the next few weeks, you will change to pureed food, then to solid food. Your meals will be much smaller and you may have to stop drinking with meals due to your small stomach.(ELITE MED CLINIC ‘s Dietician will guide you through every step of the way.)

You will need to make significant lifestyle changes after bariatric surgery to lose weight and keep it off. For example, you will get nutritional advice from our dietitian on how to change your eating habits to keep healthy while losing weight.

Your meals will be much smaller than before. And you will probably take vitamins or other supplements for life.

You will also have to, and be able to, increase the amount of physical activity you do.

What can go wrong?
This is usually a safe procedure. Sometimes people can have bleeding or leakage of fluid from the stomach.

The sleeve may expand over time, causing you to regain some of the lost weight.(this is up to you)

Gastric ByPass

Gastric bypass is surgery that helps you lose weight by changing how your stomach and small intestine handle the food you eat. After the surgery, your stomach will be smaller. You will feel full with less food. The food you eat will no longer go into some parts of your stomach and small intestine that absorb food.

Gastric bypass, also called Roux-en-Y (roo-en-wy) gastric bypass, is a type of weight-loss surgery that involves creating a small pouch from the stomach and connecting the newly created pouch directly to the small intestine. After gastric bypass, swallowed food will go into this small pouch of stomach and then directly into the small intestine, thereby bypassing most of your stomach and the first section of your small intestine.

Gastric Baloon

Most balloons require endoscopy for removal or placement. They are usually placed for up to six months, though some devices are placed for twelve months. The device is then removed, again using endoscopy. Longer placement is not advised because of the danger of damage to the tissue wall and degradation of the balloon. The use of the balloon is complemented with counseling and nutritional support or advice.

               Pros and cons
The advantages of gastric balloons are that they are quick to insert and to remove. They are temporary and can be removed at any time. The disadvantage of all the balloons is that it's possible to regain weight after the balloon has been removed.

The Allurion gastric balloon is a balloon you swallow in capsule form, which our gastroenterologist then fills with saline solution to take up space in your stomach and make you feel full. After four months, the balloon deflates and leaves your body in a bowel movement.
